Alaje was active in
the region under a different name before establishment in January
2005 as a private limited company reorganizing from the perspective
of commercial viability. Head quartered Mekelle Alaje has branch
offices at Korem, Maichew, Adishehu, Hagereselam and Adigrat. It has
about 307 staff members and 400 daily laborers from the rural areas
running its log operations.

The company has been
collecting and propagating seedlings; developing, managing and
introducing exotic tree species, [species and provenance trial];
rehabilitating of degraded catchments; protecting forests, and
planting selected tree species. It has also been doing such
conservation works as terracing and pitting as well as building
maintaining forest roads and logging operations, transporting logs
and marketing forest products.
Forest management
has been introduced for Ofla, Endamehoni and Emba Alaje plantation
blocks. According to the 2006 forest inventory, the total stock
volume was estimated at 462,000m3 of trees (E.globulus
E.camaldulensis E.cladocalyx C.lustanica) of which about 348,583m3
is allotted for production forest for immediate harvest whereas the
remaining is categorized as conservation forest.
